The 1 Simple Process Behind A Business That Never Stops Growing
Mar 03, 2025
Are you running multiple businesses?
Would you describe yourself as a multi-creative?
Is your business multi-dimensional?
Are you ready for your business to grow?
If you answered YES to any of these questions, then the next question is crucial to your entrepreneurial success.
Do you know what your business sequence is?
Imagine you didn’t even know the first thing about gardening, but you decided to grow a whole forest. You might not realize the headache you're getting into.
If you don't understand your business sequence, and you’re always working on parts of your business that don’t match what you’re trying to do, it's like you're trying to grow a forest all at once instead of learning how to grow a tree.
You will always be involved in a way that you can't sustain. And that means you can’t have the success you want.
But when you learn how to sequence in the right way, you can let your business support your life, and you don’t have to be owned by it.
“If you can grow one tree, it's easy to build a forest.” Kim White
Your Business Is Like A Tree
So is making a business sequence like making an outline for your business?
Not exactly.
When you only have an outline or a list of things you do in your business, you’ll end up with a lot of segmented things. If you don’t know how these segments are connected it’s impossible to set up a sequence in your business to make them not so hard or not so heavy.
“An outline is 2D. It's very linear. But our businesses are almost 4D.” Jill Olish
It helps to think of your business as a tree with branches that intertwine. The different parts of your business are all connected. And it’s important to know how those connections can work together.
“We want to build a beautiful, luscious tree that tells us how our business is connected to itself and each other.” Jill Olish
Tree-ing Is A Process
“Treeing is the process of making sure that things connect and flow from one to the other. It’s about connecting the dots in 3D and 4D.” Kim White
Whether you are writing a book, recording a podcast, or putting on a show, treeing is the very simple process that helps you figure out how your business runs.
Treeing shows you how to grow your business organically.
Treeing helps you take care of your clients throughout their business journey with you, instead of just dropping them off at the corner when they’re finished with your service.
“You always ask: Where are you leading them next?” Jill Olish
For example, is your social media just something you post as a one-off, or is it leading people somewhere? Treeing is how you figure that out and plan the way forward.
Tree-ing Is What Helps You Grow
Growing a business is about building relationships, and tree-ing makes you nice to work with because you are focused and clear.
That’s because tree-ing comes after mapping.
Mapping gets you focused on one goal, and tree-ing helps you plan your sequence for that goal so you can serve your clients and team well.
If you ignore the mapping process and jump straight to tree-ing, there will be too many goals to try and sequence, and that will make a hot mess out of your tree.
“It’s like introducing total chaos. You can’t take care of your clients, customers, and team in a good way because you’re trying to figure out the chaos you created.” Kim White
Creating the chaos is what causes trouble for entrepreneurs leading to overwhelm, burnout, getting stuck and wanting to quit.
It’s important to slow down and focus on your one goal until it’s working. When it's working you will have all the processes, systems and people in place. Your clients will be happy, and you’ll be making money.
Then you can add one more thing to your tree because it makes sense and is in line with what is already working.
Slowing down and treeing something is not necessarily the glamorous part of business.
It's not the fun, flashy part. But it's the part that allows your business to grow naturally without taking over your life.
“It's never too late to tree your business. And it's actually easier when you don’t have all the pieces established yet.” Jill Olish
